Felixstowe will have a full programme of events to mark Fairtrade Fortnight which runs from 28 Feb - 13 March.
In the run up to the week there will be a display in the window of Ashton Graham opposite Trinity Methodist Church, followed by a coffee morning on 26th in the church, to which all are welcome. The church will also be the starting point for a Fairtrade Health Walk at 10.30 am on Monday 7 March after which Fairtrade refreshments will be served.
The Felixstowe Fairtrade Forum is co-ordinating many of the events and will be working with two local supermarkets - the East of England Co-op and Morrisons - to promote the sale of Fairtrade goods through these outlets during Fairtrade Fortnight. There will also be a display in the Library.
Alan Muchal is Chairman of the Forum. He said: “We are delighted to be working with a wide range of people and organisations to promote Fairtrade in the town. In addition to the events mentioned above we are working with a number of youth groups and schools to promote the theme of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight, which is about increasing the use of Fairtrade cotton. The groups plan to decorate Fairtrade cotton bunting which, after the fortnight, will be sent to a national collecting centre where it will be linked to bunting from other areas in an attempt to break the record for the longest continuous length of bunting.”
Alan continued: “We are particularly pleased to be involving young people, as they represent the future. Two of the town’s schools - Colneis Junior and Grange Primary - are working towards the achievement of Fairtrade status for their schools. We wish them every success and will continue to work closely with them to help them achieve their goals.”
Other organisations will also be promoting Fairtrade. St Edmund’s Church is holding a coffee morning on 5 March and St John’s on 9 March - both from 10am - 12noon.
The Town Council, many cafes, shops, churches and voluntary groups in the town are active supporters of Fairtrade. Thanks to this support Felixstowe was granted ‘Fairtrade Town’ status in December 2009.
