Felixstowe Gains Fairtrade Town Status

It was confirmed today that Felixstowe has been granted Fairtrade Town status following a two and a half year campaign organised by the Felixstowe Fairtrade Forum.

Alan Muchal is chairman of the Forum.  He said: “We are extremely pleased that this accolade has been awarded to Felixstowe by the Fairtrade Foundation after a rigorous assessment of the Town’s achievements in supporting and promoting fair trade.  We only put our application in about two weeks ago and we were not expecting a result until the New Year - so this is a very welcome Christmas surprise.  I would like to thank the townspeople of Felixstowe, the Town Council, and the local traders, schools, churches and voluntary organisations who have given us such support. During a very difficult economic climate Fairtrade has continued to flourish both locally and nationally - helping to bring stability and fair prices to poor producers in the developing world.”

Deputy Mayor of Felixstowe, Jon Garfield, is the Town Council’s representative on the Forum.  He said: “The Town Council is very happy that Felixstowe has achieved this award following hard work by a lot of dedicated people.  I have been particularly impressed by the enthusiasm with which the Fairtrade cause has been taken up by young people in the town - especially the pupils at Colneis School, who have organised and participated in a number of special events, including a very successful Fairtrade fashion show in the autumn.”

Fairtrade status is awarded by the Fairtrade Foundation to towns and cities who meet exacting criteria on such things as the number of shops and cafes selling Fairtrade goods, involvement of schools and voluntary organisations in promoting Fairtrade and the effort put in in organising and publicising events around Fairtrade.  In awarding the status to Felixstowe the Foundation said they were particularly impressed with the number of events organised and the publicity gained in Felixstowe.
