Felixstowe’s Fairtrade Town Status Renewed

Felixstowe’s Fairtrade Town status, awarded in December 2009, has recently been renewed.  Stephen Wyatt is the secretary of the Felixstowe Fairtrade Forum. He said: “We are very pleased that this news has come through in time for Fairtrade Fortnight which starts next week (28 Feb).  All Fairtrade towns have to apply for renewal of their status after a year to ensure that the initial effort in promoting Fairtrade has been kept up.”

“We were able to demonstrate to the Fairtrade Foundation, which makes the award, that the Town continues to support Fairtrade, with more outlets selling Fairtrade goods, more organisations involved in promoting Fairtrade and a continuing high profile for Fairtrade in the press and other media.”

“The feedback from the Foundation was very positive. In their summary they said:
We would like to thank everyone that has been involved in ensuring that the Felixstowe Fairtrade campaign continues to go from strength to strength. It is because of campaigns such as this that Fairtrade continues to grow and now brings benefits to more than 7 million people - producers and their families - in developing countries.”

The Felixstowe Fairtrade Forum co-ordinates work on Fairtrade for the town. Membership of the Forum is free and the Forum welcomes new members. It has just launched a new category of corporate membership so that companies, voluntary groups, churches, schools and other organisations can register their support. Application is through the Forum’s website (click here)
which also contains further details of the Forum’s activities and plans for 2011.

Felixstowe will have a full programme of events to mark Fairtrade Fortnight including promotions with local supermarkets, exhibitions and participation in the national attempt to create and decorate a record-breaking length of Fairtrade cotton bunting. Full details are available via the website or by contacting Stephen Wyatt on 01394  671033.
