ACHIEVING FAIRTRADE TOWN STATUS

Fairtrade town status was awarded to the people of Felixstowe by the national Fairtrade Foundation in December 2009 for achieving the following five goals.

GOAL 1 - LOCAL COUNCIL SUPPORT FOR FAIRTRADE
Felixstowe Town Council passed a resolution in October 2007 to support Fairtrade and to serve Fairtrade tea and coffee at its meetings and in its offices and canteens.
The Council has given further support through the attendance of the Mayor at Fairtrade events and by appointing Cllr Jon Garfield as its non-voting representative on Felixstowe Fairtrade Forum Committee.

GOAL 2 - FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS ARE READILY AVAILABLE IN THE TOWN’S SHOPS AND CAFES
The target of 6 retail outlets and 3 catering outlets selling two or more Fairtrade products was exceeded.   At the time of application 12 retail outlets and 8 catering outlets met this criterion.   An extra achievement is the listing of all outlets on our website.   This is regularly updated.   Fairtrade products available in Felixstowe include flowers, cosmetics and footballs as well as the more widely known range of foods and drinks.

GOAL 3 - FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS USED IN LOCAL WORK PLACES AND COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS
Two workplaces, eight churches and six schools are supporting Fairtrade in one way or another.   In its assessment the Fairtrade Foundation commented that “Fairtrade is really becoming a part of Felixstowe through the active support shown by these groups and organisations.”

GOAL 4 - ATTRACT MEDIA COVERAGE AND POPULAR SUPPORT FOR THE FAIRTRAD CAMPAIGN
Since June 2007 the Fairtrade Forum has organised or taken part in over 20 events to promote Fairtrade.   The website shows how this is continuing with events for Fairtrade Fortnight in 2010.   In addition, members have given talks on Fairtrade to 9 different Felixstowe organisations   Articles, photographs, films and interviews relating to Fairtrade have regularly appeared in a range of newspapers, on BBC Radio Suffolk and Felixstowe TV.

GOAL 5 - A STEERING GROUP ENSURES CONTINUED COMMITMENT TO FAIRTRADE TOWN STATUS
The Felixstowe Fairtrade Forum has over 100 members and a committee of 10 people drawn from a range of community organisations, the Town Council and local business.

Finally, the Fairtrade Foundation congratulated the people of Felixstowe for the continued and growing support buying and using Fairtrade products.  Achieving Fairtrade town status is a step on the continuing journey of sustaining Felixstowe as an active Fairtrade town.   If you would like to help with this, please contact the Secretary via the email on this website or write to Felixstowe Fairtrade Forum c/o 68 Ranelagh Road, Felixstowe IP11 7HY.
